But of course, with every successful project comes intense analysis and negative criticism, and "Squid Game" is no different.
One thing many people pointed out was the similarity between the show and a Japanese film called "As The Gods Will," which was released in 2014. Both the show and film feature childhood games turned deadly, with the characters fighting one another for survival, although reports that director Hwang Dong-hyuk addressed the claims and stated that there aren't really any similarities beyond that, and the series was also in development way before "As The Gods Will" was. Even so, this connection between "Squid Game" and "As The Gods Will" has brought new attention to the underrated Japanese film, with many more people wanting to check out the movie.
