By this new criterion, the candidates were divided into three continental groups: Americas, Europe and a group that brings together Africa and Asia - Pacific. In addition, there was the creation of a fourth group called Wildcards+ Miss Internet in which those candidates who did not qualify for the continental selection remained in contention.
In the first year, they ranked three in each group and in the following two years, the group increased to five, returning the number of semifinalists to twenty. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, a special format was created for the 2020 pageant, motivated by the drastic reduction in the number of candidates there were 90 candidates in 2019 and in 2020 this number dropped to 74 and the format used between 1952 and 2003 was resumed, but because of the restrictions on public activities the number of direct semifinalists still remained at twenty, added to a candidate who was chosen via the internet, totaling twenty-one semifinalists record to date. At the 2021 pageant, the format used between 2011 and 2013 was used, with a small change, instead of five finalists, only three candidates made it to the final round.
